Summary

In contemporary pedagogy, one of the most important and complex problems is motivation of the classroom activity of senior pupils. In Latvia, the problem acquired particular importance since the country entered the European Union. The article claims that teachers’ activity should be aimed at increasing students’ motivation for acquiring knowledge independently. In the article, the author also looks at “the system of ratings” as a tool to motivate senior pupils during the classes of the Russian language and literature.
